Developing a Thailand solar irradiance map using Himawari-8 satellite imageries and deep learning models

Thailand has targeted to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 when the power grid will need to accommodate 50% share of renewable electricity generation capacity; see [Ene21]. The most recent draft of Power Development Plan 2024 (PDP2024) for 2024 - 2037 from [Ene24] proposes to add a new solar generation capacity of approximately 24,400 MWp (more than 4 times the amount issued in the previous Alternative Energy Development Plan 2015-2036 (AEDP2015) at 6,000 MWp, shown in [Dep15, p.9]. This amount does not yet include behind-the-meter, self-generation solar installed capacities of the prosumers, which is expected to increase at an accelerating rate. Solar integration into the power grid with such a sharprising amount will pose technical challenges to the operation and control of the transmission and distribution networks, carried out by the transmission system operator (TSO) and distribution system operator (DSO), as presented in [OB16]. Hence, TSO in Thailand will need an effective means to estimate the solar power generation across the entire transmission network, on an hourly basis, or even finer time resolution, to provide economic hour-to-hour generation dispatch for load following the total net load of the transmission, and to prepare sufficient system flexibility (i.e., ramp-rate capability of the thermal and hydropower plants, or energy storage systems) to cope with the net load fluctuation due to solar generation intermittency for maintaining system frequency stability, concurrently, in its operation. For DSO, a significant amount of reverse power flow when self-generation from solar exceeds self-consumption can lead to technical concerns of voltage regulation and equipment overloading problems. The near real-time estimation of solar generation in each distribution area will enable DSO to activate proper network switching or reconfiguring to mitigate such fundamental concerns to ensure its reliable operation.

What Am I? Evaluating the Effect of Language Fluency and Task Competency on the Perception of a Social Robot

Recent advancements in robot capabilities have enabled them to interact with people in various human-social environments (HSEs). In many of these environments, the perception of the robot often depends on its capabilities, e.g., task competency, language fluency, etc. To enable fluent human-robot interaction (HRI) in HSEs, it is crucial to understand the impact of these capabilities on the perception of the robot. Although many works have investigated the effects of various robot capabilities on the robot's perception separately, in this paper, we present a large-scale HRI study (n = 60) to investigate the combined impact of both language fluency and task competency on the perception of a robot. The results suggest that while language fluency may play a more significant role than task competency in the perception of the verbal competency of a robot, both language fluency and task competency contribute to the perception of the intelligence and reliability of the robot. The results also indicate that task competency may play a more significant role than language fluency in the perception of meeting expectations and being a good teammate. The findings of this study highlight the relationship between language fluency and task competency in the context of social HRI and will enable the development of more intelligent robots in the future.

SPOT: Text Source Prediction from Originality Score Thresholding

The wide acceptance of large language models (LLMs) has unlocked new applications and social risks. Popular countermeasures aim at detecting misinformation, usually involve domain specific models trained to recognize the relevance of any information. Instead of evaluating the validity of the information, we propose to investigate LLM generated text from the perspective of trust. In this study, we define trust as the ability to know if an input text was generated by a LLM or a human. To do so, we design SPOT, an efficient method, that classifies the source of any, standalone, text input based on originality score. This score is derived from the prediction of a given LLM to detect other LLMs. We empirically demonstrate the robustness of the method to the architecture, training data, evaluation data, task and compression of modern LLMs.

His friends – a mix of Thai migrant workers and Nepalese agricultural students – were also milling about the compound where they lived on the edge of the kibbutz, taking care of various personal tasks, when suddenly they heard gunshots. "Suddenly, I saw one of the Nepalese guys being shot, others ran to hide in a bomb shelter and then the terrorists arrived," Sarabon recounted to Fox News Digital in a video interview from his home in Udon Thani, Thailand, on Friday. "They threw a grenade inside, some of the people died instantly and others ran away, they were shot dead too."
